This communicative, experiential bilingual activity shows how to engage children in language learning in a communicative context which starts with a song associated with a triangle shape. We then used a triangle-shaped rice ball material with a triangle chant to instill the concept of a triangle shape in Japanese. Ending a lesson with an open-ended activity stimulates their creativity and creates opportunities to use the target words, so we did a pretend play (with the rice ball and other materials counting 1 through 3 corners of the triangle shape.)

There are a lot of language learning opportunities through what a culture can offer. A cultural comparison between two different cultures can be very engaging language learning with a new discovery of a different culture and enhancement of negotiation of meanings.

Food and language are inseparable because food is an essential part of a culture and a language is one of the most important parts of a culture. Food and Language activities also stimulates five senses that enhances learners’ engagement in language learning.)
